Earthing and Why We Love It!

The need to "earth" has only recently come onto the scene. Recently as in, the last few decades or generations. Let's just face it. Most of us have become "city folks." Even if we don't technically live in the big city, we are more likely to sit inside and watch a movie or surf pinterest than we are to go outside and play barefooted. It is what it is.

So what are we missing out on? A. LOT. Believe it or not, when you are connected with the ground, say through walking barefoot in grass or even gardening with bare hands, you are exchanging electrons with the earth. It acts as a detox for your body. This allows for better sleep. reduced stress and tension, less pain and better immune function. Not only that, but it could potentially eliminate the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields given off by all the electronic devices in our world (think cell phones people).

So how can you earth? So easy!

1. Walking outside barefoot
2. Sitting on the ground
3. Gardening without gloves (think hands in the dirt).
4. Even small things like mud masks!

According to earthing experts, electrons drawn into the body from the earth neutralize damaging free radicals and by extension reduce disease-related chronic or acute inflammation. 

So how does this relate to reflexology? Walking barefoot (the most common way to earth) stimulates the pressure points on the feet. If you've been with us for any time at all, you know that those pressure points directly correlate to the systems in your body. Stimulating the points means stimulating the whole body, Detoxing the whole body!

Happy Monday! Mondays get a pretty bad reputation don't they? I personally like to look on the bright side of things and say that Mondays means only FOUR more days until the weekend! Whatever works right?

Let's get right down to the topic again today. Essential oils. I use essential oil blends on practically all my clients (unless they request otherwise). The benefits astound me everytime. They add the extra punch in a 1-2 punch when balancing and aligning your health. But why do we put oils on our feet? 

1. The bottoms of our feet are known to be one of the strongest places of the body.  Our feet support our weight for at least several hours a day. That is no easy feat (pun intended). 

2. The skin on the soles of the feet are far less sensitive than the skin throughout the rest of the body, allowing us to use oils that the body needs but can sometimes cause a mild skin irritation elsewhere for people with sensitive skin.

3. While the skin may be thicker on the bottoms of our feet, they house some of the largest pores on our body. This allows the essential oils to be absorbed very quickly, some within 20 seconds!

4. Sometimes a particular oil might smell a little more medicinal than pleasant. Each oil blend is unique. Whether it is sinuses or arthritis or hormones, the oil will smell different. Now, I love almost all oils and how they smell, but that doesn't mean you will. Applying the oils to the soles of the feet and then covering with socks lets us get the benefits from our oils, without having to smell the constant potency.

And last but not least, our favorite reason to use essential oils on the bottoms of the feet:

5. The bottoms of our feet are connected to the rest of our body. If you have been with us for any length of time, you have heard this before and we will keep saying it. So when we use essential oils on the bottoms of the feet, we are able to direct the benefit of the oils towards specific organs in the body. How cool is that? How healing is that?

Cortisol, Stress and Muffins

And by muffins we mean muffin tops. As in that extra tummy that spills over jeans that are too tight. Not something any of us want, but we deal. So why is it that belly fat is the last to go? We exercise and our legs look great and our arms tone up, but our tummies still stay the same. Stress. 

When we are stressed, our bodies produce three hormones, one of which is cortisol. This hormone is responsible for getting your body back to normal after it has experienced stress. The problem is when we experience chronic stress, which our high-paced lifestyles tend to throw at us, these cortisol levels go up, but never go back down.

When your cortisol levels are high, your body hoards the fats you eat. Not only that, it takes fat from healthier areas, like your hip and butt and move it to your tummy. And of course, your tummy has more cortisol receptors, Hello Muffin Top! This ab flab then leads to more cortisol production because it has higher concentrations of an enzyme that converts inactive cortisone to active cortisol. 

The more belly fat you have the more belly fat you will have.

That is a scary thought.

So what to do? De-stress your routine. I know what you’re thinking. You don’t have time to de-stress. But studies have shown that 10 minutes of meditation a day can reduce your cortisol levels by up to 60% when done consistently.


Not to mention adding reflexology into the mix. Through the process of relaxation through reflexology, the body is more capable of dealing with stress placed on it by daily living. Reflexology releases feel-good hormones that help to improve blood and lymph circulation, increase nerve supply to the cells and release toxins from the body’s tissues. Most importantly reflexology supports self-healing which is the only-long term cure for belly fat. Bodies need the ability to take on stress, and get rid of it just as easily.

How many of you started out strong? I'm talking you didn't even look in the vague direction of the ice cream aisle for weeks, maybe even months. You were walking, and hitting the gym and looking pretty darn good in those jeans. Who says New Year's resolutions can't be kept? Ice cream. That's who. It's always calling. It's always there. Ice cream understands.

Have you ever wondered why ice cream always seems to win? Why weight loss is so hard? Why do you crave those sweets or potato chips when you have a refrigerator full of broccoli waiting to be eaten?

Lack. Of. Balance. The scales are not tipped in your favor. Pun intended. Reflexology for weight loss isn't a miracle drug, but paired with healthy diet choices and an active lifestyle, you could be well on your way to your goal weight.

Balance in the body is key to keeping your craving and appetite at bay. By stimulating the area that corresponds to the spleen, you can reduce hunger, the main culprit of weight gain. The spleen corresponds with the very outside edge of the left foot.

Continuing on toward the center of the foot, you will work the stomach and pancreas. Stimulating these points allows your body to absorb more nutrients from the food you eat, ensuring you are getting the maximum nutritional value possible from your well-balanced diet.

Next up are the points for your gallbladder (located where your spleen is located except it is on the right foot) and your endocrine system (thyroid at the base of the big toe, pituitary gland in the center of the bottom of your big toe and your adrenals located slightly under the balls of your feet). The gallbladder is responsible for storing bile and bile emulsifies fats in your food. Your endocrine glands deal with your stress levels and stress levels affect sleep and cortisol levels, both of which add to tummy fat and impulse eating. 

Reflexology alone will not melt the weight away, but as we said before, in addition to healthy lifestyle habits, it can propel you toward a healthy slim down.

Under Pressure

"PRESSURE. Pushing down on me, pushing down on you." Sinus pressure is not letting up! We are in the thick of it people and we have to do something before our heads burst. Last week we talked about the points on your feet, this week, we are focusing on the pressure points on the face that are so closely associated with all the sinuses pressure that leaves us feeling groggy and foggy.

These points seems some somewhat intuitive. They are the natural points you tend to touch when you start to feel uncomfortable. So spend time pressing, tapping and massaging your way to relief!

!. The Eyebrows
Place pressure with your thumbs upwards and slowly move outwards. It’s a great pressure point for relieving pressure behind the eyes.

2. In Between Your Eyes
You can press or tap the point located just above the bridge of your nose, in between your eyebrows, for around a minute. This helps the mucus to secrete properly, preventing the sinuses drying up and becoming inflamed and often infected.

3. Bridge of the Nose
To activate these points located at the very top of either side of your nose, press in and upwards. It plays a big part in relieving pressure behind the eyes due  to sinuses. 

4. Either Side of the Nostrils
Press down just outside of both nostrils. This will help the sinuses to drain more effectively and is fantastic for relieving pain in and behind the cheeks. Use two fingers and press against these points with your fingers at 90 degrees to the face.

So what does it mean when we say something to the effect of "Let's work on your sinuses," as we work on your feet. No we are not crazy. Its a little thing we like to call footmapping.

Believe it or not, your feet are the path to vital organs in your body! Focusing on manipulating these zones during a reflexology session you can improve your overall health by improving the function of your organs. 

Now that we have that quick lesson in footmapping out of the way, let's talk about sinuses, because according to the bees, pollen is out there. It started with pressure in my head, then a full blown headache, followed by my nose draining like the faucet in my house that I have come to think as part of the family. The nose drainage, not such a welcome guest.

Sinus issues come with the territory of Spring. A necessary evil during the best time of the year. So let's talk about ways to keep sinuses clear, moving and in check so your days outside aren't followed by a week inside feeling miserable.

This is something that is pretty simple. You can start working on your sinuses at home at the first sign of trouble. Stay hydrated, and work the tips of your fingers and toes by squeezing their tops in a rhythmic fashion for five seconds. It so is simple, you can do it in public without anyone noticing (your fingers, NOT your toes, please not your toes in public).

We pair this reflexology along with essential oils that help to clear the sinuses as a one-two-punch to get you feeling like yourself again!

Fighting the Invaders

Good morning, good morning, good morning! How many of you woke up this morning knowing you would accomplish that one thing you have been meaning to do, or knew you should have done for quite some time, but you’re just too busy with work and the kids and the last three seasons of (insert current Netflix series here). We feel you. Today is that day for us. Welcome to the very first post of our blog. Or rather, should we say, “Welcome to the World of Reflexology as we know it.”

This is the beginning of a beautiful thing. Posts about health and reflexology and the body and life and Downton Abbey (maybe not. You get the idea). But mostly posts about reflexology, because that is what we do.

You have heard it all before. Life is about balance, the ying and the yang. The push the pull. Believe it or not, your body is all about balance too. When it gets out of balance, whether it be from emotional stress (anxiety, fear, sadness) or environmental stress (think bad habits), it doesn’t respond to invaders the way it should. Therefore, you get sick. Nobody has time for that.

Never fear, we are here with a solution. Your body is engineered to heal itself. The lymphatic system is all about that. It is the cleansing process of the body. It guards against invaders such as bacteria, viruses and disease. It removes waste from tissue and flushes out toxins and excess water. When this system doesn’t function properly, you end up with congestion and sounding like Sneezy and Dopey at the same time.

Lymph relies on circulation. What happens when you start feeling under the weather? You sit down on the couch and watch the fourth season, like the good patient you are. This is where reflexology comes in. By focusing on the areas of the feet the correspond with the chest, neck, shoulder, groin, thymus, spleen and upper lymphatics, your lymphatic system will get the support it needs to give your immune system the extra boost to get you over the hill of your next cold.

You can also increase lymph circulation by pointing, flexing and rotating your feet. Pretty simple huh? That is the point. Balance and simplicity for a healthier and happier you!
